HAWAII COMMUNITY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Site opens on December 2, 2013.  This site has over a hundred different scholarships.  They will ask you general information and then select which scholarships you qualify for.  You will need to write a 2 page - max 1200 word personal statement which covers the following quesitons: What are your reasons for attending college?
Why did you choose your course of study?  What career goals do you have?  You should also include any other information that will demonstrate that you are a worthy schoplarship recipeint and describe any outstanding attributes and talents.
The application deadline is 2/20/2014.  However if you can submit your application by 1/31/2014...the committee will double check your information and notify you if you have missing documents.  So try to get your application by 1/31.
This year, the application is totally online...normally you would have to mail them your transcript, letters of reference etc, but this year you have to scan all your info and upload it to them. 
They need your Student Aid Report from FAFSA, so do your FAFSA as soon as you can after January 1st.  Use your parents 2012 tax information and then when they do their 2013 taxes, you can go back into FAFSA and correct the information.

HAWAII ROTARY YOUTH FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

The Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation scholarship application is now available in the Transition Center.  This is a $5000 scholarship to attend a 4 year Hawaii or US Mainland College or University.  You must submit your Student Aid Report with the application, therefore you must complete your FAFSA as soon as you can in early January, using your parents 2012 tax information.  Criteria for selection is academic achievement, scholarship merit or financial need.  Personal involvement in campus, community activities and employment experience will also be considered.  You must submit your application by January 31, 2014 to the Volcano Rotary Club.

Tips for Requesting a Letter of Recommendation

Tips for Requesting a Letter of Recommendation
~ Give the person writing the letter a sufficient amount of time to write a strong recommendation.  Begin brainstorming who you  would want to write the recommendation as soon as the application is available.
~  Ask the recommender if they will be able to complete a strong letter by the deadline and follow up with them four weeks before the deadline to remind them to submit it.
~ Have a backup recommender in the situation that the original person you asked is not able to complete the letter in time.
~ Provide the recommender a chance to get to know you better; sit down and have a conversation with them about your goals and passions, family history, or provide them with a resume or the college essays you have already written.
~Do they know what your short and long term goals are?  Are they aware of your community service and leadership experience?  If not, tell them.
~ Do they know why you are applying to the scholarship?  How your passions line up with the organization's missions?  What will the impact of the scholarhip be on your future and your family's future?

Be sure to provide your recommender an envelope with a stamp and the address of the scholarship neatly printed. Also send them a thank you note whether or not you get the scholarship.
